Peltier Cooler
There are many applications for a Peltier cooler as it is one of the most efficient forms of cooler on the market. The Peltier or thermoelectric cooler uses the Peltier effect which involves the transfer of heat between two dissimilar materials to create the cooling effect. The Peltier device uses electrical energy to transfer heat from one side of the device to the other, in this case from the hot side to the cool side creating what can be called a solid state active heat pump. While heating can be achieved by many far more efficient methods, the Peltier cooler is preferred in applications where only cooling is desired.
These coolers are becoming quite popular in the home high performance gaming computer world as they operate silently instead of needing to have several very noisy fans running to keep the processor and the rest of the computer cooled down. The cooling effect is powered by a simple DC power source and may or may not use a fan to disperse the excess heat. Proper Peltier performance is calculated based on ambient temperature, how well the heat sink actually performs and the thermal load along with Peltier module geometry and how much power is being supplied to the cooler. This type of cooler is not as efficient as a compression cycle system with refrigerant as you would have in a refrigerator, buy is more likely to be used in an electronic environment where size and the fact that it works without the use of moving parts is an important factor. Beyond being used in computers by home enthusiasts, there are many more uses for the Peltier cooler such as small portable coolers that you might take camping or plug into the power outlet of your car for those long road trips. The military makes used of them for much of their electronic equipment out in the field to keep things cooled down while reducing weight and power consumption. Many home and industrial dehumidifiers use the Peltier heat pumps as a way to pull the water out of the air.
The Peltier cooler has even been used in outer space on both satellites and various spacecraft as a way to absorb the heat of direct sunlight and dissipate it to the cooler side which is on the shadow side from which it is then dispersed harmlessly into space reducing the risk of damage to either the satellite or the spacecraft which could result in catastrophic loss of both equipment and life. Scientists also use them in a unit known as a thermal cycler which is used in the synthesis of DNA where rapid cooling and heating of the samples is required in order for the proper reactions to take place.
